OnSIS Ontario Student Information System
OnSIS is an initiative by the Ontario Ministry of Education to aggregate all data relative to students, teachers and school boards in one centralized database to improve the ministry's long term planning capability, and get an accurate "snapshot" of the education system province wide.
The Objective
OnSIS is a complex software application and the Ministry was spending a large amount of time, resources and expenses in training administrators from all school boards and schools in Ontario, in-person in Toronto. The administrators were concerned at the amount of time in-person training took and the lack of just-in-time decision support tolls to help them use OnSIS.
The Solution
We developed a series of modules to guide administrators through everyday OnSIS tasks. The modules produced using Adobe Captivate and Adobe Presenter walk administrators through all of the OnSIS functions.
To compliment the launch of the online e-learning modules, we deployed Macromedia Breeze (now Adobe Connect). We training Ministry staff to use Connect and to hold virtual province wide town halls to launch each module as it was completed. The modules are all available in English and French.
The server application and curriculum were deployed on our servers and five years later we provide ongoing support to the Ministry staff.
The Result
All major OnSIS functions are covered by online modules. Ministry staff hold monthly town hall's to communicate updates and future features for OnSIS as they are launched. The in-person training and the 1-800 help desk are no longer required, realizing the Ministry an immediate ROI on their investment.
